Um, why am I posting about the new Tinkerbell movie here instead of on the off-topic board?

BECAUSE DISNEY HAS TRANSPLANTED GADGET'S BRAIN INTO TINKERBELL'S BODY!!!!!

I'm not kidding! I always understood that "Tinkerbell" was a derivative of "Tinkle Bell" (and bells were sometimes used to indicate fairy voices). But in this new production, they take it literally - Tink is a "tinker fairy" and a rather ditzy inventor. Unlike the nature fairies, her department serves a support role for the other fairy departments, making various sorts of tools and such.

Having just been created by a baby's first laugh, Tink is assigned her new post. She finds the routine work boring but becomes fascinated with trying to make something out of some human junk she finds. She wants to visit the human world to see where these fascinating springs and screws come from, but tinker fairies do not do that. So she makes some attempts at becoming a different type of fairy. During these various fiascos, she cheers herself up by reassembling a broken music box she finds.

One last attempt at changing jobs ruins the fairies preparations for spring and she nearly runs away. After a last minute change of heart, she starts churning out a series of new inventions to accelerate the other fairies work - all of which work exactly as planned. Sound familiar?

It's a pretty good movie overall, quite humorous (especially when Tink tries to teach a hapless baby bird how to fly or to supply some light for a squadron of fireflies). But come on! The only things missing are the mouse ears, a few "golly"s and a scar around her head from the brain transplant!

Gee. Wonder what she ever saw in Peter Pan? A big furless green clad chipmunk?

(Pair her up with Wendy, and watch her Lawhiney jealous streak come out!) :gad-angry:

Interesting. Sounds like there's a chance I could buy it as really being Tink. But it also sounds like the continuous politically correct re-work of everything Disney has done to get where they are (or were). I wonder which is more prevalent.

The bright side is if they used Gadget, it would probably be a different Gadget in many ways, and that would be a real disgrace.

Hey, I liked the homocidally jealous Tink! There's no reason for all of Disney's blond, blue-eyed, broad-hipped beauties to be inventors!

Maybe Fernando was onto something by introducing her to the Acorn Cafe round robins.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but this character's name is supposed to be epononymous, yes/no? Her name is "tinker (or perhaps 'tinker's') belle". Literally, "the beautiful tinkerer". A tinker is a journeyman tinsmith, someone who would go door to door fixing your silverware or small items. Our word "tinkerer" that we take to mean "someone who experiments with odd items (a good definition for Gadget!) originally had this meaning.

In J.M. Barrie's original story of Peter Pan she was described exactly in this way...
Quote:
The Wikipedia entry on Tinkerbell states...
In the original book and play, Tinker Bell is described as a common fairy who mends pots and kettles, i.e. a tinker, and is often referred to simply as "Tink".

She is described in similar way in the "Disney Fairies" section...
Quote:
Wikipedia on Disney Fairies...She is a problem solver and is considered the best pots-and-pans fairy in Pixie Hollow, as she has a passion for fixing things (the traditional meaning of tinker).

So my guess is this is actually a "call back" to her original "source material" personality, something I personally endorse.Image

I'm not going to say I disliked the character that way, just that homicidal characters can't star in a Disney series.Image

Okay, actually Tink redeemed herself by going from homicidally jealous pixie, to self-sacrificing heroine, when she nearly died saving Peter's life from Hook's pirate booby trap.
(2 versions, in stage version, she drinks medicine laced with poison. In Disney version, she
takes the full brunt of an bomb explosion.)

Yeah. Real tame Disney standards. :? Guess Walt opted for the bomb because he craved more excitement! :? :d-whoa:

In short: she went from tinkerer to Rescue Ranger in a flash! :gad-whoa:
(Not bad, considering she'd pulled a Benedict Arnold in a previous scene, and betrayed Peter's hideout to Hook out of revenge for his banishing her after she tricked the Lost Boys into shooting Wendy down with a bow and arrow!)

(GAAAASP.... Oops. I just pulled a Gadget, didn't I? Golly. :gad-sad: )

Oooooo.... then again, I feel a fanfic coming on....

Don't you know fairies are so small they only have enough room for one emotion at a time? XD Says so in the book of Peter Pan. If she gets jealous for instance, then it consumes her. If she feels heroic then that consumes her.

I never said she had them all at once.

What happened with Tink (I think) was an escalating "color wheel of emotions," changing hues one by one, moving in and out of Tink like a changing of the guard. Kind of like a spoiled child on a high sugar buzz; changing emotions like a TV remote changing channels with each twist and turn of the plot.

Small wonder we feel worn out ourselves once the tirade abates. To Peter, having Wendy play "mother" to the Lost Boys was a whole new game, but for Tink, the game got personal. It apparently took that one teetering moment on the brink of almost losing each other, to get Peter and Tink to come back to their senses, realize that game time was over, and get on with the serious business of saving the Darling Children and the Lost Boys, and putting Hook and the Pirates in their place! (The all-essential third-act climax.)

A rare grown-up moment for two Neverlanders who swore NEVER to grow up.

Yes she can! However, by the end of the first season Tink would be doing a solo!
