"kill troll with sword." ;)

While the threat from the chans has mostly died down for the time being, it could easily spring up again at any time, or we may one day face yet another threat from a different source. With that in mind, the following plan has been created for dealing with possible troll invasions. Everyone please read it, know it, and should the need arise, follow it. There are just two steps.

First, if a troll spams a thread with porn, or other offensive material, stop posting to that thread immediately. Do not respond to the spammer in any way, either publicly, or through PM. Do not call them names. Simply stop posting to any thread they spam. Treat it is though it were locked until further notice. This way, who ever spammed the thread will have their name on the end of that thread in the forum listings. If they spam multiple threads, which is likely, this will make it very easy for everyone to see just which threads have been affected, so we as mods can easily find and delete the offending posts, and everyone else can avoid them. If you do see a spammed thread, you'll see who did it, and will then be able to see at a glance which other threads to avoid by looking at who made the last post in each thread.

Second, if a spamming occurs, the first person to see it needs to post a new thread with a clear warning in the subject line, like "Beware! So-and-so is spamming!" That way people don't even need to see the actual spam to know which threads to avoid. They can simply avoid any thread in which So-an-so made the last post.

It's important that everyone follows the two steps above, since as moderators we are not online at all times, and we can only edit or delete offending posts, not ban members, so our power in stopping a spam attack is limited. We can get rid of offending posts, but not prevent new ones. For that, banning of the troll is required, and for banning we need an administrator, such as Dr. Indy, or Chairman Kaga. Once one of them arrives after the spamming, they can then ban the troll(s) and the remaining spam can be cleaned up. They will then use the warning thread to give the all clear and we can all get back to our normal lives with as little inconvenience as possible.

Update: 2008-09
Since this plan was created, a couple things have changed, so I figure it's time for an update. One, as you know I've been given administrative powers so I can help out Indy when the need arrises. The plan is still in place, though, since neither one of us is here full time to ban possible trolls. Two, if you see a spammer spamming, use the cool little Image button to flag the post so it'll be that much easier for us to see which posts need to be deleted.

Sorry, but I removed the link. They may be offline for now, (Hooray!), but they could come back at any time, and that site definitely wouldn't be appropriate to link to if they do. It's nice to see that they're having a bit of trouble, though. :)

CJ,don't count your chickens till they've hatched. There's plent of time left in the month. Besides, ther'e's ALWAYS somewhere else to plan raids. I kind of liked having them were I could keep an eye on them [yes, even once we weren't the centre of attention. I've already helped warn the victims of another few raids in advance - and don't 7chan HATE me for it!]

---originally, there was a list here of other possible planning sites, but it was removed, rightfully, to stop me giving them ideas. :P let's just say there were a lot...I think I made it past 8, and may have broken into double figures!---

To be honest, they were still watching the Cafe once the min raid thread was gone, and talking about re-raiding it because another site had them pegged, so Fram's right, they could be back at any time. Truth be told, these methods really should be universal - just don't rise to the bait, don't get het up, and blow it off. It's hard, but acting to stop them by working with admins and mods is the best solution - actions speak more effectively than words.

And if there's one thing I've learned from this, it's that they don't count losing as being kept at bay, it's not getting any 'lulz' , or laughs, from it.

Fram, is it feasible that we appoint new Admins, or in some way increase mod powers? Don't modern versions of phBB allow us to have more complex leadership levels?

P.S. If you're feeling brave, you can always do what I inadvertantly did and train yourself to not be shocked by most troll images - of the 5 main ones, I can cope with 5 without even flinching by the simple expedient of 'seeing but not-seeing'. The most popular one now has no effect unless I actually TRY and look at it, my eyes jsut...unfocus otherwise.

We've already discussed this among the moderators/admins, and short of making all the mods into admins, we really can't be granted more powers. The way things are set up is already working pretty well, though, so that shouldn't be necessary.

Rock 'n' Roll, Fram. If you're all happy, and if we can keep things sane while we wait, it'll all be good in the hood.

As far as I could research 7 was organized not so long ago by a group of very annoing SOBs who got themselves banned from 4.
There's not so many of them as I can see who made raids their main amusement. They'll try to find new place but we'll watch them anyway.
It's looks like we watch them even more than they do.
And I appreciate your efforts, I'll act if I'll see the opportunity myself.

Be careful where you follow channers. Eventually, you gotta call a halt, or you'll end up somewhere yo don't wanna go [I mentioned a specific one in my unedited post, but Fram's right, I really shouldn't name the place!].

7 was made because of moots attempt to control 4. I don't think ian or any of the others were actually banned after /b/day, but raids were a large part of the 7 philosophy [it was a real addition, seperating /b/ and /i/ was actually a stroke of genius...]. Raid planning is banned on 4, but it's hard to monitor I think, as it takes place in /b/ and the place has MILLIONS of posts [as in over 19 million. That's a lot. Puts Campisi's 9000 in it's place!]

Hee! Campisi is OVER NINE THOUSAAAND!

...and if you get that, yuo've been around the *chans way too much. Join the club.

I developed my resistence by now.
But most of the stuff I learned on:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/
in painless way. (which I advise to all you curious as start)
You'll se there how most net phenomenas described by channers, their advisaries, and neutral wise peoples.
(Must warn you though, link may contain curse words in definitions, maybe I shouldn't post it but site is very helpful)

Only by virtue of having that gag pulled so many times I had go look up what on earth it meant...

If we need more mods/admins here perhaps, then so be it. I'd volunteer for duty if need be, been modding/admining on a few other boards in my time...
